The companies said on Thursday that BP
has also agreed to sell Devon a 50pc stake in its Kirby oil sands interests
in Alberta, Canada, for $500m. The deal gives BP the entry into Brazil which
Tony Hayward, the chief executive, has long eyed.
However, Devon’s assets are in the Campos basin, rather than the Santos basin
where most excitement is focused after multi-billion barrel discoveries in
recent years.
Devon announced its asset sale programme in November, saying it hoped to pull
in as much as $7.5bn for its international and Gulf of Mexico assets as it
looks to focus on its onshore oil and gas fields in North America.

Gordon Brown set Budget day for March 24, leaving just over a week to debate
the complex legislation before the Easter break.
Chris Sanger, head of tax at Ernst & Young said: “The complexities of
the election timetable, coupled with the forthcoming Easter break, mean that
there will be very little time to debate whatever measures the Budget
includes. The Government will need to rush a Finance Bill through Parliament
before an election, completing in a few weeks what would, in a normal year,
take months.”

Investec, the South African bank whose international operations are listed in
London, will take its place in the blue-chip
index.
Resolution, which is headed by insurance tycoon Clive Cowdery, will leave the
top tier for the mid-caps on March 19 as part of FTSE Group’s quarterly
review which was based on Tuesday’s closing share prices. Its shares have
fallen by about 20pc this year since being offered to investors at 100p in a
December 2008 flotation that raised £600m to fund takeovers.
The company, which aims to buy and merge at least three life insurers or asset
managers before selling or listing the enlarged group in 2012, has completed
one deal - the £1.8bn puchase of Friends Provident last year.

His comments come as Westminster and the City eagerly await the date of the
budget, which is to be announced by Chancellor Alistair Darling this
morning.
There is intense speculation that it will be held on March 24. Treasury
officials would only confirm that the date would be published in a written
statement to the House of Commons.
