Lawyer fined over boiler room scam

Andrew Greystoke has been banned from working in financial services in any
capacity and fined £200,000, while Atlantic Law, at which he is a senior
partner, has also been fined £200,000.

The fine relates to Mr Greystoke’s dealings with four unregulated Spanish
stockbroking firms, which were involved in boiler room scams, under which
high pressure sales techniques are used to sell worthless shares to
consumers.

It was imposed by City regulator the Financial Services Authority and upheld
by a Financial Services and Markets Tribunal today after an appeal.

Investment by UK businesses fell by much more than expected from July to September, according to estimates from the Office for National Statistics.

The fall of 1.3% from the proceeding quarter compares with previous estimates of 0.2% and 0.5% reductions. Read more

ING bank accepts €10bn Dutch cash injection

ING, the Dutch savings bank which has more than a million savers in the UK, is to get a €10bn capital injection from the Netherlands authorities, the latest bank to be affected by the global credit crisis.

ING is the Netherlands’ largest listed bank, with 85m customers worldwide, and is one of the world’s top 20 financial institutions. It operates under its own name in this country, and recently took control of 180,000 accounts from failed Icelandic banks Kaupthing Singer & Friedlander and Heritable Bank.
